Anxiety symptoms

Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)

Here is a list of some common symptoms for Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD). You can find more information at www.depression.org.uk/main/infocentre/anxiety_centre

Mood:

  • excessive worry
  • tension
  • irritability

Somatic:

  • blush/pale
  • increased arousal
  • increased heart rate and blood pressure
  • muscle tension
  • breathing muscle tension

Behaviour:

  • increased anxiety
  • sleep difficulties
  • agitation
  • restlessness
  • strong startle response
  • avoidance
  • shaking
  • fiddling
  • speech dysfunction

Cognitive:

  • dread
  • apprehension
  • fear
  • perception of danger or threat
  • hypervigilence
  • poor concentration
  • losing control
  • nightmares
  • irritable
  • derealisation



Panic Disorder (PD)

Here is a list of some common symptoms for Panic Disorder (PD). Not everyone will experience all of these symptoms, and although the symptoms may be uncomfortable and frightening, they are not dangerous. You can find more information at www.depression.org.uk/main/infocentre/anxiety_centre

  • Hotness of breath and smothering sensations
  • Choking
  • Palpitations and accelerated heart rate
  • Chest discomfort or pain
  • Sweating
  • Dizziness, instead feelings or faintness
  • Nausea or abdominal distress
  • Depersonalisation or derealisation
  • Numbness or tingling sensations
  • Flushes or chills trembling or shaking
  • Fear of dying
  • Fears of going crazy or doing something uncontrolled Some people with panic attacks hyperventilate - breathe in a rapid and shallow way, which results in a fall in the concentration of carbon dioxide in the blood. This may cause dizziness, tinnitus (continual noise in the ear, such as ringing or roaring), headache, a feeling of weakness, faintness, and numbness and tingling in the hands, feet, and face.
